This started as one poem.
It didn’t feel right.
So I wrote it again—this time, a little closer to the truth.
HAPPY GIRL
Who is that happy girl
Smiling through the tears
Who is the happy girl
Hiding all her fears?
What secrets does she keep?
Behind her eyes so dark as night?
What secrets does she keep?
That may never see the light?
Through her smiles & laughter
We feel a common bond
Through her smiles & laughter
No one knows what sadness has gone on
So I ask—who is that happy girl
Smiling through her pain?
Dare I say, she’s not happy
It’s just her refrain.
DO YOU SEE ME
Do you see me?
I’m too old for you.
You say I have boss energy.
It’s just me.
I’m more subdued.
Do you see me?
I feel hurt.
I pretend not to care.
But I do.
